SCABS History 1986

SCABS History 1986
When 1986 rolled around SCABS experienced its first major change as founding member Ken
Murphy decided to leave the league.  Whether it was because of having a losing season, or just
a lack of interest, we bid him a fond farewell, thankful that he introduced us to fantasy sports.  In
his place Tom Ditucci joined the league and converted the Yanks into the Ogden O's.

We also created team logos for the new season (see the above image).  The draft started from
scratch again and the O's had the first pick, choosing Darryl Strawberry.  Randy Grattan selected
Don Mattingly, Nate Klingebeil took Dwight Gooden and Mike Weinpress chose Cal Ripken.
Doug Abbott and 1985 champion Roger Taber selected Orel Hershiser and Eddie Murray,
respectively. Mr. Smithson was chosen in the 25th round for the second consecutive season.

Some of the preseason issues faced by owners were "Should we retain errors at –1 point?"
"Should we have mandatory relief pitchers?" "Should pitcher losses be increased from –3 pts to
–5 pts.  The answers by vote were, Yes; No; and Yes. We also kept our 15 game season
schedule and the original playoff format.

There were fewer trades in our second season with 2 compared to 8 in 1985.  There is nothing
in the records about waiver wire transactions. So, I'm not sure what happened there.  By the
time the dust had settled on the season, the Penguins, Sunsetters, Blue Crew and Doinx
qualified for the playoffs.  In the first round the Blue Crew upset the mighty Suns and the newly
minted O's likewise dismayed the Pens. In the final championship series, the Blue Crew
squeaked by the Doinx 155-152.  Jim Rice was the offensive titan with 23 points while Mike Witt
won 2 games and gave up no runs in 17 innings to score 37. The Doinx got 20 points from
stalwart Keith Hernandez and another 17 from Bobby Ojeda.

In the second game, neither team could mount up much of an attack as the Doinx slid past the
Crew 125-106.  The Blues scored a ridiculously low point total in spite of Jim Presley's 31 and
Tony Fernandez's 28. The Crew was let down by a total -13 points in pitching – a trend that
continues to this day.  The Doinx scored 91 hitting points with Von Hayes posting 20. Bobby
Ojeda was again the pitching leader with 19.

In the rubber match, it was all Doinx as the Dallas club scored 118 hitting points and 65 with
their pitching.  Hayes again led the squad with 18 points as eight hitters were in double digits for
a true team effort. Mike Scott was Cy Young for the week with 2 wins, 15 innings and 4 earned
runs for a 31-point total.

The Blue Crew continued their embarrassing scoring with 119 in spite of Jim Rice's 27 hitting
points.  Finally, Mike Weinpress' Dallas Doinx were champions of 1986 – recipients of the 2nd
annual Tacky award.
