SCABS History 1991
The new year found The Scribe at the top of his journalistic game. We have a pretty much
complete record of the season with detail and commentary. All that is left to do is reprint some
of the newsletters and game results.

The 1991 Pop Division playoff game was between the Key West Sunsetters and the surprising
Ogden Orioles. Roger Taber traded his way to an 11-4 record and then managed his way to a
216-181 victory over the O's. The Suns were paced by DH Jack Clark's 29 hitting points along
with Mark Grace (27), Rueben Sierra (27) and Jose Fernandez (23). The Key West pitching
was a bit weak, but with a hitting performance totaling 173 points, the Suns needed a mere 9 of
their 43 points to best the Ogden team. Tom Ditucci's squad had three hitters over 20 points
(Will Clark, Bip Roberts and Ron Gant). Good pitching from Doc Gooden (22 pts), Mike Morgan
(19 pts) and reliever Dennis Eckersley (18) wasn't quite good enough!

In the Soda Division the resurrected Wild Boars faced off with the perennial contender Bronx
New Yanks. Here is the summary of that game:
New Yanks. Here is the summary of that game:
Fatback Stadium, Borneo – The sweltering heat of this Pacific Ocean Island proved to be more than the
boys from the Bronx could handle. The New Yanks arrived in the Wild Boars' playgound with great
expectations and a history replete with conquest. Two times these Yanks have won the coveted "Tacky"
and more times than not had been able to scuttle the "Sarawak Swine" as the Boars are referred to by the
native Dyaks who flock to the stadium night after night.

and more times than not had been able to scuttle the "Sarawak Swine" as the Boars are referred to by the

This, however, is a different year and the story had a different ending! The Yanks posted 40 and 34 points
the first two nights to jump to a 28 point lead. Even as late as the fifth day of this contest the Yanks held a
commanding 33 point lead.

Perhaps it was the humidity, perhaps it was the natives and their reputation as vicious headhunters. Or
maybe, just maybe, it was the dreaded dysentary! The Wild Boars have been drinking the local water all
summer and, while appearing a bit anemic during the mid-season, they came on strong at season's end.

Whatever the reason the unexpected results stunned the SCAB world. The Boars racked up 40 points on
Monday to pull within 5 and tallied 65 more the final night to break 200 and send the Yanks crashing into
the swampy coastal plains of Borneo. Final score 208-171.

The Wild Boars received twenty plus points from 3 hitters (Raphael Palmeiro, Robin Ventura and
Barry Bonds). But it was their pitching that made the difference as they garnered 38 points from
Kevin Appier, 22 from Terry Mulholland and 13 apiece from Tom Glavine and Tom Candiotti. The
Yanks picked up 23 points from Frank Thomas and another 21 from Wally Joyner.
